After a surprisingly successful 2021/22 season in which the team managed to finish an impressive 2nd under Jorge Sampoali Marseille will be hoping to kick on in the forthcoming season. With recent unimpressive European ventures the fans will be hoping the team can show some steel in the upcoming Champions League campaign.
After a great season it's typical that at the end of the season there would be some fallout at the club just like recent years gone by. That came in the form of Jorge Sampoali deciding to leave the club with the departure of William Saliba back to Arsenal being the final straw. He oversaw a tactical overhaul at the club with the implementation of fast flowing entertaining football and after years of disarray seemed to connect the fans back to the club. Hopefully this trend can be continued. The owners then acted quickly in the summer and decided to appoint former Hellas Verona boss Igor Tudor.
The Manager.
With one of the lowest budgets in Serie A it was a great achievement that Igor Tudor managed to get Verona into 9th place with an unfashionable squad. Marseille fans should expect a fast flowing possession based 3-5-3 with interchanging occurring all across the pitch. This system is similar to Sampoalis and should allow players like Payet,Milik and Bakambu to have great seasons once again. The players already at the club seem perfectly suited to Tudors system and this could make for an even better 22/23 campaign. However with one of the most demanding fanbases in France Tudor will need to get the team playing as quickly as possible and with an opening day 4-1 victory the signs are looking good so far.
Transfers.
After the club loaned many players in the 21/22 season the club hierarchy has decided to make many of the deals permanent including Guendouzi(£10 million) Lopez(£11 million) Under(£7.5 million) and Milik(£7 million). All of these players will be expecting to start and add something different to the team. The club has also decided to act in the loan market once again with Arsenal youngster Tavares arriving along with Ruben Blanco to add much needed depth to the goalkeeping department. The club has also signed Ligue 1 assist machine Jonatahn Clauss for a bargain £7 million who will make the right wing back spot his very own. Then there are the signings of Columbian Luis Suarez who scored a double on his debut and Jordan Veretout who is sure to start in midfield and replace the only notable exit of Boubacar Kamara to Aston Villa. The business is not done there as the free transfer of Alexis Sanchez has excited the fans beyond belief as well as FC Porto stalwart Chancel Mbemba who had an excellent debut against Reims.
With this complete squad overhaul with 12 signings made, the eyes will be on Marseille this season as they compete for the best of the rest in Ligue 1 and aim to reach the Champions League knockouts. Due to the arrival of the new progressive manager Igor Tudor and the new signings made in the transfer window fans of The Olympians should feel very excited for the new season and for a neutral they will make a great team to watch in 2022/23.
